Chapter 29. Orina 0815, 11 December

Technically the sun rose at 0758 but the heavy mist that blanketed the city of Orina and its surrounds prevented all but a weak light from illuminating the battlefield. It was too weak for effective, physical observation and the mist played havoc with other means of detection.

But at 0813 the wind picked up and the mist began to dissipate as the heat from the sun above and the wind below combined to morph the blanket of white into a series of patches, some thick and heavy with others just a smattering of wispy moisture.

The first sightings came in a couple of minutes later. The sighting, of what they believed was a whole battalion laid out into assault formation, was deemed to be accurate and brought to the attention of the Army Commander. Argus looked to his CI staff officer, Col Xenta Piskalum. Her eyes were tired but they were resolved. So he didn’t need to ask for her opinion. Instead Argus gave a nod to Frezinum on the Support (SPT) terminal next to her.

“One Battery, 20 rounds anti-armour, 20 rounds anti-pers, fire for effect” barked Frezinum.

The range between the battery and its target was only 24 kms. The missiles went virtually straight up before coming almost straight back down. Total flight time was less than a minute and it gave no chance for the Imperial force to react other than with their short ranged beam weapons aboard their AFVs. These, though were of only limited help and the bulk of the 80 AArm and 160 APers munitions delivered by the 40 rounds fired devastated the area and those vehicles and exposed personnel within it.

A minute later the assault forces along the line began moving towards their objectives and were soon detected. A veritable flood of sightings came in. What also came in was counter battery fire from the batteries supporting the Imperial forces. Three of them combined to target the republican battery that already fired. It’s ‘shoot and scoot’ action was underway but the response was so quick that it still lost half its launchers along with their crews.

The battle for Orina was now joined.

Back at the Imperial High Command Hazon was annoyed when he heard the ground forces had commenced their assault. But when he read further he understood why. It was his greatest fear and he knew if they did not get the fighters down there fast it would end badly. He berated the fleet commanders and soon saw the ships descending down to 10K. But it was a good ten minutes later before he saw icons on the holo representing the fighters that would stream down to the surface.

At the IRA HQ Frezinum was kept constantly busy issuing fire support orders. He had dedicated three of his own batteries to counter battery fire and there was a deadly duel going on now between the opposing batteries. Another three were providing fires onto observed enemy ground concentrations and three were so far held back.
